The Well

Dug in the early part of 1798 in meet the needs of the town’s growing populace. It is placed slightly away and at an angle from the emerging main street, creating a kind of unofficial Town Square. This sense of a communal space was solidified by the building of the nearby The Chapel, which looks across the well and faces down the main street.

The well was the scene for a pivotal moment in the town’s short history, the Hanging of Barney Quinn.
